Tuesday Excursion: Meet Malmö!

NordicFuzzCon is moving to Malmö. This is a great city with so many exciting experiences to offer, and we want to share them with you! So we are organising a trip on Tuesday the 18th of February 2020 (the Tuesday before the convention).

You can choose between either,

Please see below for a description of each tour and the practical details.

A tour of Malmö

This is your chance to play tourist for a day and see and taste the best that Malmö has to offer.

This trip includes both a bus tour and the museums. You can read more about the museums below.

We have rented busses that start from the NFC venue, the Clarion. From here, we take you on a guided tour to see famous sights and stop for photos along the way. And you are free to load your fursuit onto the bus as well. You can be in fursuit at any point you wish during the tour of Malmö. You can also change into/out of fursuit on the bus, but not during the stops as we have limited time on each stop.

So hop on and have an adventure full of friends, fun and food!

You will get to see the charming squares and the old city, where we will make brief photo stops. Also, you will be taken to a fabulous viewpoint of the impressive Öresund bridge between Denmark and Sweden. Here you will have the chance to be in a photo with the bridge in the background. If you want to be in fursuit, then bring it along and get changed on the bus. In addition, you will see Malmö’s tallest skyscraper, the Turning Torso, which is placed beautifully by the water. And you will see the massive old limestone quarry which looks like an alien world. Today, it has been turned into a nature reserve.

The tour also includes a longer visit to the Disgusting food museum. They will open it exclusively to us furries, and in there you can see and experience a variety of dishes from around the world. And you can taste them too – if you have the courage, that is. But we warn you, that is not for the fainthearted!

Here is a short description from the museum:
What is delicious to one person can be revolting to another. Disgusting Food Museum invites visitors to explore the world of food and challenge their notions of what is and what isn’t edible. Could changing our ideas of disgust help us embrace the environmentally sustainable foods of the future? The exhibit has 80 of the world’s most disgusting foods. Adventurous visitors will appreciate the opportunity to smell and taste some of these notorious foods. Do you dare smell the world’s stinkiest cheese? Or taste sweets made with metal cleansing chemicals?

Last, but not least, we will stop at Malmö Arena. As it so happens, the semifinals for the Swedish nationalN/A EURovision Song Contest, Melodifestivalen, is happening in Malmö on the same weekend as NFC - and if we are lucky, we will be able to spot some of the artists here. And after the disgusting food, we would like to offer you some nice food. So at the Arena, you will get a Swedish meatball lunch with all the trimmings.

The museums

On this (part of the) trip you can see Malmö Castle (Malmöhus), the Aquarium and the Science Museum of Malmö – all three conveniently located at the same place. They are open for NFC attendees at 17:30 – 20:30, during which time we have exclusive access to all three.

It is an open area and you can walk around, fursuit and take pictures; and you are free to walk between the buildings as you see fit.

At the stage of the trip, the busses will leave us. But the three museums are right next to each other and only a 10-minute walk from the NFC venue (which you can see clearly from the castle).

Malmöhus Castle

Malmöhus castle is a beautiful (but also scary!) old Medieval castle, which is only a 10 minute walk from the main NFC venue. You are free to walk around the castle as you want, but we are also organising some guided tours in English. During these, the guides will tell you about the history of the castle in a fun and entertaining way. You are welcome to make as many photos and videos as you like. Just don’t touch the old furniture, as it may break.

There will also be opportunity to change into fursuits and get some photos of you in a classy historical setting of royal parlours and bedroom – or in the scary dungeons and the place in the courtyard where prisoners were beheaded in the past! A special fursuit lounge will be provided at the castle, allowing you to suit up on location. As it is not far from where the beheadings took place, we have decided to call it… the headless lounge! So don’t forget your fursuit!

The Aquarium

Of course, we cannot have a furry convention trip without something animal related. So you will also have the opportunity to visit the brand new aquarium, which is located in the basement of the castle. It has fish, reptiles and other cold-blooded animals. In addition to the aquarium itself, it also includes an exhibition on the Swedish nature, and even a section with dinosaurs and other fossils found in Scania.

WARNING: The aquarium also has spiders. So if you don’t like those, you might want to avoid that section.

The Technology & Maritime Museum

Last, but certainly not least, you will have access to the Science and Maritime House (Teknikens och Sjöfartens Hus). This museum has been closed for renewal for most of 2019, so you will get to see a new improved museum.

The museum´s permanent exhibitions focus on history, natural history, technology and seafaring. It features everything from Linnaeus’ fascination with nature (he famously systematised the animals and plants) to the study of the stars.

In the Muscles and Motors exhibition, you can travel back to the time when hand- and horse-powered machines were replaced by engines that ran on steam, electricity, gas, oil and petrol. And in the exhibitions on shipping, aviation and engines, you can see crawl into a real submarine! So no matter whether you are interested in natural history, the stars or large and spectacular machines, this museum should have something for you.

You are free to leave the museums whenever you want, and they are only a 10-minute leisurely stroll from the NFC hotels. But please remember to bring your luggage and fursuit back with you, or the ghosts might try them on during the night.
